isolating hospitals.
Challenges
ASST Lodi was in the planning stages of a network upgrade when the pandemic struck. The crisis accelerated the need for Smart Working that would enable greater flexibility to enable the re-planning and re-scheduling of health services. It highlighted the urgent need as well, to equip even the most remote healthcare sites with high-speed secure connectivity. At the same time, ASST Lodi required more bandwidth and flexibility to support the digitalisation of healthcare applications, ensuring service continuity up to the patient’s bedside for applications such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation which requires networked infusion pumps to manage drug injections.
Action
ASST Lodi implemented the Rainbow™ by Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise cloud communications platform, which quickly provided the flexibility for staff to adopt Smart Working practices from any location using their mobile phones. Today, the platform also allows staff to consult with medical experts from around the world and host round tables to study specific clinical cases. ASST Lodi has also deployed a new network infrastructure with advanced backbone switches and high-end data centres to interconnect all remote sites within a ring infrastructure using 10-100 GbE links. The multi-service network uses Shortest Path Bridging (SPB), a flexible, highly resilient and secure protocol that meets the market requirements of a vertical such as healthcare which requires the highest levels of redundancy and reliability for business continuity.
